The Ghost Damselflies of Miyazaki

Japan offers a pristine, hyper-efficient gateway into East Asia’s most spectacular wilderness — uncommercialised sub-tropical river basins, ancient cedar forests, and unprecedented Odonata micro-endemism, all a short domestic flight from Tokyo.

Target fauna: Mnais costalis (Kyushu Mnais damselfly), endemic Epiophlebia superstes (an ancient dragonfly relict), and seasonal swallowtail Lepidoptera.

Day 1 — Arrival & Macro-Habitat Orientation

Transfer from Miyazaki Airport to a premium traditional ryokan. Afternoon lecture on Kyushu’s sub-tropical micro-climates, followed by a low-impact twilight orientation walk along the river basin.

Day 2 — The Rushing Streams of Tsuno

Active morning field tracking along the pristine mountain streams of the Tsuno foothills — territorial damselfly behaviour, larvae boring in riverine timber, and a macro-photography masterclass.

Day 3 — Lowland Forest & Canopy Ecology

A guided day-hike through protected old-growth evergreen forest. Interpretation shifts to nocturnal beetles, canopy insect interactions, and seasonal butterfly flight paths, with a private local culinary experience in the afternoon.

Day 4 — Morning Flight Windows & Departure

Final field session targeting early-rising odonata during optimal light windows, then handover for onward transfer (e.g. Kagoshima or Kyoto).
