The Wet Meadows of Xe Pian

Sub-tropical floodplain and dense evergreen forest edge meet across Xe Pian’s protected marshland — the “edge effect” in one of its most literal forms, where forest interior gives way to open wetland.

Target fauna: marsh-dwelling Coenagrionidae (narrow-winged damselflies), rare jungle butterflies, orchid mantids, and lanternflies (Fulgoridae).

Day 1 — Wetland Inbound & Boundary Walk

Transfer to an eco-tented camp on the edge of the protected area. Afternoon trek along the boundary where primary evergreen forest meets open marshland to observe edge-effect insect diversity.

Day 2 — Deep Forest Stream Tracking

Specialised forest-interior streams deep into Xe Pian — shade-loving damselflies, non-destructive tracking of canopy beetles, and spectacular lanternflies camouflaged on tree trunks.

Day 3 — Ta Ong Elephant Trail Bog Walk

Seasonal wetlands and forest glades via historic forest tracks — aquatic insect adaptations in standing forest pools, wetland dragonfly territoriality, and macro-photography of insect-plant interactions.

Day 4 — Marsh Dawn Exploration & Departure

Sunrise session using mist-covered wetlands for macro-photography of dew-covered dragonflies before flight temperatures are reached, then handover back to Pakse.
