The 4,000 Islands & Mekong Torrents

Laos is dominated by the Mekong itself — its waterfall networks and protected wetlands are globally significant hotspots for riverine and torrent-loving Odonata.

Target fauna: torrent-loving Gomphidae (clubtail dragonflies), metallic river damselflies, giant water bugs (Belostomatidae), and riverbank Lepidoptera.

Day 1 — Island Arrival & Mekong Hydrology Briefing

Transfer from Pakse Airport by private boat to a luxury resort on Don Khone island. Evening lecture on how the Mekong’s rapids create oxygen-rich micro-habitats for aquatic insect larvae.

Day 2 — Khone Phapheng Torrents & Clubtails

Morning session at Southeast Asia’s largest waterfall, tracking fast-flying torrent dragonflies along the spray zones. Afternoon tracking of riverbank butterfly congregations.

Day 3 — Vat Phou Ancient Ruin Forest

Transfer to the base of Mount Phu Kao to explore the pre-Angkorian ruins of Vat Phou — forest canopy insects, ancient tree cicadas, and mountain-slope Odonata along the historic stone staircases.

Day 4 — Floodplain Flight Windows & Handover

Early-morning session mapping insect activity across agricultural canals and floodplains, then handover toward Pakse or the Cambodian border.
