Volcanic Marshes & Alpine Hiking
High-altitude wetlands, volcanic crater lake ecology, and demanding ridge trekking.
The volcanic highlands of Kyushu hold high-altitude wetlands found almost nowhere else in Japan — isolated by elevation and geothermal activity into some of the country’s most concentrated pockets of alpine insect life.
Target fauna: high-altitude Corduliidae (emerald dragonflies), specialised alpine bog insects, and endemic montane beetles.
Day 1 — Volcanic Ascent & Base Camp Setup
Private transport to the Mount Aso highlands; check into a premium onsen lodge. Evening briefing on alpine safety, high-altitude weather, and navigation.
Day 2 — The High-Altitude Marshes of Kuju
Full-day trek through the volcanic bogs and highland wet meadows of Kuju, focused on how thermal activity creates isolated micro-habitats for rare alpine insects.
Day 3 — Kirishima Crater Lakes Expedition
Transfer to the Kirishima range for a demanding ridge hike connecting volcanic crater lakes — lake-dwelling macro-fauna, montane insect wind-migration, and alpine survival adaptations.
Day 4 — Peak Flora & Macro-Fauna Trailing
Ascent through moss-draped beech forest to sub-alpine meadow, tracking endemic beetles and montane butterflies with non-destructive field techniques.
Day 5 — Synthesis & Inbound Handover
Morning review, insect data logging, and final photography checks, then handover at Kirishima-Onsen Station.
